Sundays are for reset.
Mondays are for clocking back in.
I’m going to be honest. I’ve never really paid attention to the days of the week before. In fact, it kind of scares me to admit that because organization is a huge passion of mine, and not knowing what day of the week it is has come off real oblivious and inconsiderate in the past. Especially with most friends or family being free to hangout on the weekends.
With my line of work it’s easy to not pay attention to the days of the week because weddings happen on all different kinds of days - Monday through Sunday - and a wedding videographers schedule is self made. And when you make your schedule yourself, it’s all up to you. When you work, when you play. When you edit. When you go outside, if you can ever even make that happen.
But this year, I’ve been working the most on finding balance. And paying attention to the days of the week has helped me with that.
It’s common to get married on specific days because of number patterns and superstitions. I’m all for it. Writing the date makes me feel like I am acknowledging the choice my couples made to have their wedding on this specific day. In January I made it a point to write the date first thing in the morning and wanted to start my own daily calendar. Writing the date every morning became part of my morning routine and a ritual for me. It makes me feel like I’m honoring the day. I'm starting the day by putting good intention out there and it's my way of saying “thank you” to the universe for having me experience life again.
Paying attention to the days of the week also comes hand in hand to paying attention to the date. I’ve only recently noticed every day of the week has its own vibe. The categorization for the days of the week and what they mean to me is still a work in progress. But it’s starting to look a little something like this;
Sundays - Reset, kind of lazy, relaxed and laid back. The week was exhausting and has taken it out of me. Sundays are a great day for letting myself take it easy. Maybe I’m still working but slower today. That’s totally cool.
Mondays - Back to work, I need to focus because I was feeling lazy yesterday.
Tuesdays - My personal favorite because there is still plenty to look forward to and maybe I can take it a little easier because I worked hard on Monday. Or maybe, Monday really unlocked the creative flow and I want to keep working on that project at full speed on Tuesday.
I’m not sure how I feel about Wednesdays and Thursdays yet - they are definitely more focused work days.
Fridays are great because it's classic to give yourself permission to celebrate the “end” of the workweek. “End” for me though in quotation marks because let’s be real. I’m always working, it just depends on what work am I working on. Friday sunsets have a vibe and my favorite drink is a blended margarita. It’s nice to let loose on a Friday.
Saturdays are a version of Sunday but I would say they have a little bit more of a sharper side. I’m relaxing but still working.
This is all extremely vague by the way because it’s supposed to be vague. As someone that is self employed I want to give myself structure but also give myself permission to have a lot of freedom and breathing room in my schedule. Because changes occur throughout the week. Energy levels fluctuate. That's normal! The main thing is I have a vague idea of what I want and that is what guides me to go with the flow.
I have always admired people who are able to follow a routine and have discipline in their schedule. Saving certain tasks for specific days. That’s essentially what I’m going for but with my own twist. I realized maybe I can categorize my days into A/Bdays kind of like what happened at school. Alternating between fun work / play work / fun work/ play work.
There are so many tasks to do. Endless amounts of possibility for my next move. How do I keep up with everything I want to get done? I’m working on finding my balance this year. Being aware of what day of the week it is, is my step one.
My main goal is to be able to flow through life seamlessly. I want to view the mundane tasks as rewarding tasks in their own way. I clock in when I edit or when I have to go to a shoot. I also clock in when I put on the getting things done around the house hat. I clock out when I finished a day of editing and it’s time to make dinner, even though I'm wearing the cooking hat now and it’s still a lot of work.
I have a theory. Life is naturally an endless number of tasks so If I endlessly alternate between a clocking in/ clocking out / fun work / play work mindset, I will constantly be rewarding myself by noticing my improvements, push and willingness to keep moving forward.
I want to be proud of myself and the person that I want to be. For me that means being balanced. It’s important for me to be a good daughter to my parents, to keep up my relationship with my friends, to take the time to call my grandparents, as well as find the time to go on a walk or be in nature. Journaling, keeping the home clean, keeping up with the laundry, cooking and groceries. All of this goes hand and hand with making sure all my files are organized. Footage is backed up, films are edited, emails are answered, clients are followed up with. Did I charge all my batteries? Am I on schedule with my editing workflow? Am I sharing my work?
The past me was capable of neglecting different areas of her life by being extremely narrow focused. Which can be a good and bad thing. I’m working so much on my editing so I have “no time” to hangout with my family. Or I’m just crafting all the time and procrastinating the work I know needs to be done. It’s safe to say I’ve been actively working on changing that and spreading out my attention.
My grandparents have always told me “a little bit of everything is enough”.
My friend Soph says “there is always time to do the things you want to do. You make the time”.
There is a reason so many successful people out there emphasize the importance of a work/life balance and I’m on my way! This is the year that made the difference.
