Artistic, Unique and Cinematic Hawaii Wedding Videographer Shares - Filming Is Meditative

My journal from 7.29.24

I feel good. Like I’m starting to understand how to live my life in balance.

“I got this”

“say that whenever you feel like giving up” - says Kai.

Yesterday was especially awesome because I finished Michelle’s film and she FaceTimed me to express her gratitude. She was crying. She was not expecting this outcome for her project. And the kids screaming in the background “how did you do that. How did you make that out of nothing? I didn’t even know our house looked so cool”.

I was overwhelmed with joy. I never usually get a FaceTime call. That meant so much to me.

“Honestly I’m so blown away Sonia and the fact that you did it makes it even more special”.

Sonia (Соня) is my family name. I grew up with my Ukrainian family calling me Sonia. Now, Sam’s family calls me that too!

Michelle is going to be my future sister in law! And I was excited to help her with her project. Earlier last year Michelle had inspired me cook. I almost forgot about fruits and vegetables since I finally started living on my own. But watching Michelle live her life, inspired me to start making soups like my grandmas used to make!

When Michelle came to me with her project idea, she told me she needed some headshots and maybe a little video about her. I had a vision, it had to be real artsy of course. The shoot couldn’t happen without me helping her bring some sparkle to the kitchen first, and us waking up early the next day to catch that mystical morning light.

During the shoot Michelle told me she felt really comfortable with me. That was my main mission. I just wanted her to be in her element, and I wanted to capture her in her safest space. I told her not to pay much attention to me. “Just go about your morning and your cooking the way you normally would, like I’m not even here”.

Sometimes, direction is a nice way to guide your subject during the shoot. But other times, I want you to get lost in the moment. Forget about me.

Filming feels really meditative for me. Cooking is meditative for Michelle. We were both in our element.

“It’s like - I feel all these things in my head but I’ve never seen my emotions and how I value my work in an art form, made by someone else? It feels incredible to see”. Michelle said after I showed her the film.

I’m so happy I could help her with her beautiful project. I knew from the start, it was going to be epic. And of course, I knew it would have to be  stitched together with one of Ann Annie's atmospheric songs.

A true collaboration between the chef, the artistic eye and the feeling sound gives us.

PS: If you need an about you film, please reach out and let’s talk about it! I would love to help you capture you in your element, whatever that may look like for you!
